Radio Handi enables you to organize group chats via SMS and via live conference calls. With it, you can blast an SMS invite out to everyone in your group, organize SMS group chats, and also use text messaging to invite your group into a live voice conference. You can also create ad hoc SMS group chats on the fly from any mobile phone.
We designed Radio Handi as a mixed-media system, meaning you can create a group, and then communicate with the group via any combination of live voice, listen-only telecasts, SMS (text messaging), email and voice mail.
Email/SMS Blasts
Get the word out quickly, send an email/SMS blast to everyone on your group, or to a mini-list within your group.
Just send an email to yourgroup@radiohandi.com or yourgroup.minilist@radiohandi.com. We'll relay the message to everyone who has provided either an email address or SMS (text message) enabled mobile phone (USA only for now). Email users will receive the message in its original form. Mobile phone users will receive a text message with a web link to display the full text of the email.
SMS Chats
You can use Radio Handi group text messaging to organize SMS chats. Members of your group just send a message to 866-687-2373 in the following format:
"yourgroupname The rest of the message follows..."
--or--
"yourgroupnumber The rest of the message follows..."
--or--
"yourgroup#minilist The rest of the message follows..."
Your text message will be relayed to other group members via SMS and email. You must be subscribed to a group and have SMS enabled to use this feature.
Ad Hoc (On The Fly) Group Chats
You can also start SMS group chats on the fly, from any mobile phone, even if you do not already have an account on Radio Handi. Simply SMS 866-687-2373, and use the instructions below.
1. Creating A New Chat Group
Send ".create groupname"
ex. ".create volleyball"
2. Adding People to a Group
Send ".add groupname telnum1 telnum2 ...."
3. Starting an SMS group chat
Send ".start groupname"
The people in this group will be invited to join the chat by replying to an invite message. If they reply, they will be able to send and receive text messages to everyone who is participating from this group.
4. Sending an SMS to the group
Once you've joined the chat, any text messages sent to Radio Handi will be relayed to the other participating group members, typically within 20-30 seconds.
5. Switching from SMS chat to voice
Just send the command .voice, and the system will automatically invite everyone in the SMS chat to call in to a conference call.
6. Ending a chat, starting a new chat
Just send the command .end to end a chat in progress (it will also time out after 10 minutes of inactivity), or send the command .start groupname to start a new chat with a different group.
Live Voice Chats
Use broadcast email and SMS to invite your group to join a live conference call. SMS is great for short messages, but not for a conversation. Quickly invite a group of people to dial into your conference bridge. This is a great way to organize live voice calls on the fly.
Just send an email or SMS using the instructions above and invite people to join you by calling one of our local access numbers (the main US number is 712-432-7000) and then dialing your group number when prompted. VoIP users can dial yourgroupnumber@radiohandi.com via SIP. See our international access and dial-in instructions for a complete list of worldwide access numbers.
